Twilight…
The transition
from day to night,
when the light fades and
shadows grow longer
until they dissolve into darkness.
In twilight, the city changes,
and things emerge that daylight cannot reveal.
Dusk is the bridge between light and dark,
between life and death, between reality and dream.
Schemerstad is celebrating its anniversary with this 15th edition!
The festival has become one of Leiden’s most talked-about theatre events.
The city as a backdrop is one of the festival’s most acclaimed and unique features.
Let yourself be swept away by the city and sway with the reflections of the evening light. Indulge…

LET ME IN
Location: Nieuwe Rijn
Ensemble Jan Joost Aten – Absurdist theatre
A bouncer guards a door.
People try to enter, but he stops them: they can go in, but it’s full.
Thus, LET ME IN becomes an absurdist performance about deadlocks and new possibilities.
During Schemerstad, a shortened version of the original play will be performed.
Written and directed by: Jan Joost Aten
Cast: Boris Crijnen, Maaike Damen, Laurike in ’t Veld, Laurens Mingelen, Mark Siera

CLINGING
Location: Van der Werfpark
Joosen and De Jager – Physical cabaret
We’re all just muddling through.
Comfortably nestled in our own bubbles.
Talking to others is unnecessary. Listening feels awkward.
So we prefer to talk about the lump. Clot against clot – figure it out.
We cling to survive. CLINGING, in other words…
And in the words of John Buijsman: “Physical cabaret of the highest order.”
Concept and performance: Sjoerd Joosen and Jeroen de Jager
Director: Emiel de Jong
Technical support: Dirk Jan Noordermeer
CRADLE
Location: Vliet
Stadsgezelschap PS|theater – Musical performance
In CRADLE, Rian Evers sings a lullaby to her newborn daughter.
Just a few months old, the baby receives all the love, care, and opportunity the world has to offer.
A golden future lies ahead. But as Rian sings her to sleep, she begins to wonder:
Can she truly promise her daughter that she can be or become anything she wants?
With CRADLE, Rian and director Pepijn Smit present a solo performance exploring a question that has long preoccupied Leiden’s city theatre company:
How does your cradle shape your future?
Music and lyrics: Rian Evers
Direction and co-writing: Pepijn Smit
Music consultant: Ralf Gerritse
MONUMENT
Location: Witte Singel – Lipsius building
Creative Company The Kitchen – Dance and movement theatre
A princess has lived in seclusion for years, locked away in an enigmatic, block-like palace.
Warned of the dangers outside, she was told she’d be safe within.
But one day, desire overcomes fear. She steps outside – and nothing is as it seems.
In MONUMENT, she embarks on a magical, surreal journey filled with wonder and disorientation.
As her surroundings shift, so does her self-image.
What is real, and what is merely a carefully crafted illusion?
Director and composer: Jamie de Groot
Scenography and costumes: Sissi Tang
Cast: Arturo Vargas, Danai Papadopoulou, Martijn Schipper, Paola Martire
